Bitcoin Hovers Near $80,000 as Stock and ETF Inflows Indicate Potential Breakout
The price of Bitcoin, currently at $79,553.72, has retreated to $79,000 after briefly surpassing $80,000 during Asian trading hours. As of the latest update, the cryptocurrency with the largest market value has seen a 0.4% increase over the past 24 hours. The CoinDesk 20 Index has also risen by 0.4%, accompanied by a nearly 1% increase in Ether and slight gains in XRP and Solana. According to Marex analysts, the current price level is more significant than the market narrative. They stated, 'The psychological barrier of $80,000 is crucial. A clean break and hold above this level could turn this into a momentum trade with room for extension. However, a rejection and decline would keep us within the same range logic and invite profit-taking towards the mid-$70s.' The analysts further noted, 'This is where traders will be watching to see if spot demand continues to drive up offers or if the move is primarily driven by positioning.' The likelihood of a clean break above $80,000 remains high due to the risk-on sentiment in global markets and strong market flows. Marex analysts explained, 'The driver stack is straightforward: equities are firmer due to AI and megacap earnings, and crypto is benefiting from this risk-on impulse. At the same time, institutional demand is clearly back in the mix.' They added, 'Strong ETF inflows towards the end of last week indicate that real money is investing in the breakout attempt rather than fading it.' The 11 U.S.-listed spot exchange-traded funds pulled in over $600 million on Friday, extending a two-month run of institutional demand that has totaled $3.29 billion, according to SoSoValue. The market insights team at QCP Capital noted, 'Spot ETF flows remain supportive, with roughly $163 million in net inflows last week. Although there were notable outflows from April 27 to 29, likely due to month-end rebalancing and basis trade adjustments, Friday's $630 million inflow more than offset those earlier outflows.' Despite the supportive backdrop, analysts have identified a few key risks that could pose challenges. Firstly, the risk-on rally could face renewed pressure if tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalate again. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that purchase Iranian oil. Timothy Misir, head of research at BRN, stated, 'Global markets are entering a more fragmented phase with trade tensions intensifying. The United States has warned China of 100% tariffs if it continues purchasing Iranian oil, and China has responded with defiance. At the same time, President Trump has raised tariffs on EU vehicles to 25%, adding pressure to transatlantic relations.' Secondly, persistent security risks in decentralized finance (DeFi) threaten widespread adoption. For now, the setup is straightforward: equities are strong, ETF inflows are rising, and Bitcoin is benefiting from both. It is essential to remain alert. The chart shows Bitcoin's weekly price swings in candlestick format. Early today, BTC tested the resistance at $80,619, the level where the November sell-off ran out of steam, paving the way for a bounce. A decisive break above this level would strengthen the case that the recent rebound is part of a broader uptrend, potentially opening doors to $85,000. However, failure to break through could see the rally stall, with the market at risk of another round of selling pressure. Therefore, BTC is at a make-or-break level.
