Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's inaugural stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot program, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in conjunction with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight provided by EY, BILS represents a major breakthrough in Israel's financial sector. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. This surge has been fueled by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets, including the U.S. However, the dominance of U.S. dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-U.S. markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable resilience, bolstered by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Having appreciated by over 20% against the dollar in the past year, the shekel has emerged as one of the top-performing fiat currencies among developed nations. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
