Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
In a significant move, Ondo Finance is bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by introducing a proxy voting feature. This innovation allows investors to participate in corporate governance, a crucial aspect of traditional investing, by enabling them to review company filings and submit their voting preferences through Broadridge's ProxyVote system. The feature is accessible to holders of over 250 tokenized securities on Ondo's platform and can be accessed using crypto wallets, offering a seamless experience akin to that of traditional brokerage accounts. This development is particularly noteworthy as the tokenized equities sector has experienced rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, more than tripling in size over the past year. As the largest issuer in this sector, with over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, Ondo's move is set to have a significant impact. The introduction of proxy voting addresses a critical gap in tokenized equities, which have often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting the underlying shares. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this move aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible, combining the benefits of on-chain assets with the governance of underlying assets. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems, aiming to provide a unified workflow for both digital and conventional assets. This collaboration is expected to enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized asset ecosystem by providing the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance as traditional markets.
