Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and Big Four consultancy firm EY, which provided auditing oversight. The stablecoin market, which comprises crypto tokens tied to traditional financial assets like fiat currencies, has expanded significantly over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion. This growth is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty if on-chain payments default to dollars as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as one of the strongest performing fiat currencies among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other leading currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
