According to a report by The Guardian, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage received a substantial donation of approximately £5 million, equivalent to around $6.7 million, from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire associated with the cryptocurrency firm Tether, prior to announcing his candidacy for the Clacton seat in 2024. The Conservative party has referred Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, and Labour has also accused him of breaching House of Commons rules. Farage acknowledged the donation in an interview, stating it was intended to ensure his safety and security after facing previous threats. The donation, made by Harborne in 2024, has sparked controversy, with the Commons code of conduct requiring new MPs to disclose benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election. Reform UK maintains that the gift falls under the exemption for personal donations and was unrelated to Farage's decision to run for office. The issue has drawn attention to the regulation of cryptocurrency donations in UK politics, particularly after the government imposed a moratorium on such donations in March, citing concerns about the potential for foreign interference.
