Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a landmark move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY overseeing the auditing process. The stablecoin market, which has grown to over $300 billion in the past 18 months, is predominantly dominated by US dollar-pegged tokens. This has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty if on-chain payments default to dollars as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as a strong performer among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
