US Regulatory Body Takes New York to Court Over Prediction Markets Dispute
In a recent lawsuit, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has taken action against New York, arguing that the state's efforts to curb prediction market firms infringe upon its national regulatory jurisdiction. This move follows New York's own lawsuit against cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Gemini, alleging violations of state gambling laws. The CFTC asserts that federal law grants it exclusive authority over commodity futures, options, and swaps, thereby preempting state law. However, a coalition of 37 state attorneys general has countered that this stance threatens their ability to protect citizens. The CFTC has also sued other states, including Arizona, Connecticut, and Illinois, over similar issues. Chairman Mike Selig has emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the CFTC will defend its regulatory jurisdiction over prediction markets. In response, New York officials have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing state gambling laws and protecting consumers.
