KuCoin EU Enhances Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to address concerns from its regulator, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license issued by the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans to the role of Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML function, as announced in a recent press release. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to Sabina Liu, Managing Director of KuCoin EU, the company has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure a robust structure. This development comes at a challenging time for KuCoin, which has faced regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and Dubai. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the FMA might allow KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
