Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: A Ticking Clock to Prevent Catastrophic Losses

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be compromised by quantum computers, potentially allowing hackers to steal funds. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those owned by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. A quantum attack could enable hackers to drain these funds without needing to compete with transactions in progress. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently expanded the problem by publishing keys for any bitcoin spent since its activation. Although some proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, aim to address the issue, they lack broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority in bitcoin makes it challenging to coordinate a solution, unlike Ethereum, which has a dedicated program for quantum resistance. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to implement effective countermeasures before quantum computers become powerful enough to launch a devastating attack.
