DeFi Leaders Unite to Support Aave Users After Major Crypto Hack
The decentralized finance world is witnessing an unusual display of coordination in the aftermath of a massive crypto hack. Aave, a prominent lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort following significant losses tied to the Kelp DAO exploit. The initiative, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted a concerted industry response. Aave Labs spokesperson stated, 'There's a shared priority around supporting users and restoring normal market conditions. Many participants are deeply connected to DeFi and have a direct interest in ensuring markets function as expected.' Aave is central to the effort, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally, while other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink played a strategic advisory role in the discussions. Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem has always been at its best when it moves together. DeFi United is exactly that – a broad, coordinated response to protect users and strengthen the infrastructure we've all helped build.' Smaller contributions have come from Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound, among others. Entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have also made deposits or purchased AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation, alongside Tyro, contributing to the effort. Aave Labs spokesperson added, 'These are long-standing Aave relationships across the ecosystem. Teams like Consensys, Sharplink, and others have been in close contact throughout.' The contributions are structured in different ways, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, highlighting varying approaches to balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support affected rsETH holders and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
