Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
In a bid to bridge the gap between tokenized equities and traditional ones, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized securities. This development enables investors to engage in corporate governance, a crucial aspect of traditional equity ownership. Through its collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company filings and cast their votes via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. Investors can access these features using their crypto wallets, thereby enjoying the benefits typically associated with brokerage accounts. This innovation is particularly significant given the rapid growth of the tokenized equities sector, which has witnessed a tripling in size over the past year, with over $1.1 billion in value locked. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo's $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform underscores the importance of this move. The introduction of proxy voting addresses a critical gap in tokenized equities, which often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens do not grant direct shareholder rights, this new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the underlying shares. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this development aligns with the company's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible. "By combining the benefits of on-chain assets, such as free transferability and DeFi compatibility, with the governance rights of underlying assets, we are creating a more inclusive and transparent financial system," Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The goal is to create a seamless experience for both digital and conventional assets, fostering trust among investors through increased auditability, transparency, and compliance. As noted by Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, this move will "go a long way in making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors."
