US Crypto Regulatory Body to Utilize AI for Application Reviews
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its proactive approach to digital assets, is now embracing artificial intelligence to compensate for its reduced workforce. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is developing new technologies, including AI, to streamline its processes and improve efficiency. The CFTC is working to automate its registration process, which currently relies on manual document submissions. Selig explained that AI tools can review applications, identify potential issues, and flag them for staff review, thereby speeding up the feedback process and rejecting incomplete or inaccurate submissions. The agency is also utilizing AI for market surveillance, with staff being trained on Microsoft's Copilot and developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and detecting suspicious trades. Under Selig's leadership, the CFTC has taken significant steps in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the creation of a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The agency has also been actively involved in policing fraud and manipulation in crypto markets. Furthermore, the CFTC has been engaged in a contentious debate over prediction markets, with Selig maintaining that the agency has exclusive jurisdiction over these firms. The CFTC has taken enforcement action against bad actors, including a recent case against a US Army Special Forces soldier accused of insider trading. Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to taking action against those who violate the law, stressing that its enforcement stance is not mere rhetoric.
