Nigel Farage Under Investigation for $6.7 Million Donation from Tether Billionaire

According to a report by The Guardian, Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, received a substantial donation of approximately £5 million, equivalent to $6.7 million, from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire with ties to the cryptocurrency company Tether, prior to announcing his candidacy for the Clacton seat in 2024. The donation has sparked controversy, with both the Conservative and Labour parties arguing that Farage failed to adhere to Commons rules by not declaring the gift. In response, Farage acknowledged the donation in an interview, stating that it was intended to ensure his safety and security following previous incidents, including a milkshake attack in 2019 and a firebomb incident at his home last year. Harborne, who holds a 12% stake in Tether, made the donation in 2024, before Farage's successful election to the Clacton seat. A spokesperson for Reform UK characterized the payment as a 'personal unconditional gift' unrelated to Farage's decision to run for office, emphasizing that the party is confident everything has been disclosed in accordance with the rules. The Commons code of conduct mandates that new MPs register benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election, and Reform UK claims the gift falls under the exemption for purely personal gifts. The Conservative Party has referred the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, to investigate whether the funds were used for political activities rather than security purposes. Labour chair Anna Turley accused Farage of 'appearing to have broken the rules again.' The controversy surrounding crypto donations in the UK has led to a moratorium on such donations, with the government citing concerns that digital assets could be used to channel foreign funds into UK politics. The ban, which will be incorporated into the Representation of the People Bill, imposes criminal penalties for non-compliance. Additionally, Farage has invested in a London-listed bitcoin treasury company, further fueling the debate about cryptocurrency's role in UK politics.
