Gemini Secures Derivatives License, Eyes Expansion into Regulated Markets
The US-based cryptocurrency exchange, Gemini, co-founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has received approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a derivatives clearing organization (DCO) license. This development enables the exchange to clear and settle trades internally, thereby enhancing its control over prediction market products. As a result, Gemini's shares experienced a 7% increase. The approval marks a significant milestone in the company's expansion into regulated derivatives and prediction markets, which have witnessed substantial growth, with trading volumes exceeding $63.5 billion in 2025. With the newly acquired licenses, Gemini aims to establish a comprehensive trading ecosystem, encompassing sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. The company also intends to introduce crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for its US-based users, further solidifying its position in the market.
