Senators Grill Commerce Secretary Over Alleged Tether Loan to Family
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing questions from Senate Democrats regarding reports that his children's trust received a loan from Tether to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of his company stake to them. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on whether Tether provided financing for Lutnick's transfer of his company stake, valued in the billions, to trusts tied to his adult children, following his compliance with government ethics requirements upon taking office. The lawmakers expressed concern that if the reports are accurate, it would raise serious questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence on his policy decisions. This development comes as Congress has recently introduced new legislation governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, with Lutnick and Ardoino having been present at the White House signing of the law. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
