US Authorities Arrest Army Special Forces Member for Allegedly Trading on Classified Information
The US Department of Justice has taken action against a high-ranking Army officer, Master Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, for allegedly exploiting sensitive information about a military operation in Venezuela to make lucrative bets. According to the indictment, Van Dyke, a member of the elite US Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, used his knowledge of the impending raid to place bets worth $33,000, which yielded approximately $400,000 in winnings. The DOJ claims that Van Dyke's actions constitute a serious breach of trust and a clear case of insider trading, which is prohibited under federal law. The accused allegedly created an account on the betting platform Polymarket and made multiple bets on the outcome of the military operation, including the potential invasion of Venezuela and the removal of its leader, Nicolas Maduro. Van Dyke's actions not only compromised national security but also put the lives of American service members at risk, according to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The agency is pursuing a separate complaint against Van Dyke for insider trading. After the raid, Van Dyke allegedly attempted to conceal his identity and transactions by withdrawing his winnings, converting them to a different cryptocurrency, and transferring the funds to a brokerage account. The case has sparked widespread attention, with US President Donald Trump expressing his disapproval of the practice of using confidential information for personal gain. The president stated that the world has become 'a casino' and that he does not support the concept of betting on sensitive information.
