DeFi Leaders Unite to Rescue Aave Users with Hundreds of Millions in Recovery Plan
The world of decentralized finance is often fragmented, but in times of crisis, it can also reveal a surprising level of cooperation. Aave, a leading DeFi lending protocol, is at the center of a major recovery effort following significant losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, known as 'DeFi United,' has garnered around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital still awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a coordinated industry response. Aave Labs stated that there is a shared priority to support users and restore normal market conditions, with many participants having a direct interest in ensuring market stability. At the heart of the effort is Aave itself, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for recovery. Other key contributors include Aave's founder, Stani Kulechov, who has pledged 5,000 ETH, and several other prominent figures within Aave's ecosystem. The response has also extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder, Joseph Lubin, committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. Smaller contributions have come from across the community, including Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle. Some entities, such as Babylon Foundation and Renzo, are making deposits into Aave, while others, like Circle Ventures, are purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with many teams having long-standing relationships with Aave. The contributions vary in structure, with some offering grants, others deposits, and several extending credit lines. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed that Arbitrum governance approve the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH to support the coordinated remediation effort. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
