Israel Introduces First Regulated Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the nation's first stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This collaborative effort involved the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion in value. This surge is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets, including the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed market currencies, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. With a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, the shekel has emerged as the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to blockchain-based financial systems, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in this space.
