Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Shekel-Pegged Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This development is the result of a joint effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which comprises crypto tokens linked to traditional financial assets like fiat currencies, has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion. This expansion is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of U.S. dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-U.S. markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty if on-chain payments default to dollars as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed markets, buoyed by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP surpassing $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
