Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Risks Without Requiring a Fork

The developers of a new wallet claim to have discovered a method to address the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a system that enables developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. The Quip wallet incorporates a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, which provides an additional layer of security on top of Bitcoin's existing security measures. By leveraging a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's core layer. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, despite it being discussed by Satoshi himself. Developers estimate that a protocol upgrade could take 5 to 10 years, but our approach provides similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp's proposal, BIP-361, suggests phasing out quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork proposal involves creating a new chain with quantum-resistant sidechains. However, Quip's approach eliminates the need for a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote. The setup provides an alternative solution that requires no modifications to Bitcoin's core layer, instead utilizing a separate network to process transactions and settle them on the main chain. While Quip's approach has its advantages, it also has its limitations, including the potential for Layer 2 protection to be insufficient and the risk of quantum attacks. The wallet's launch is scheduled for next week, and a third-party audit is currently underway. Postquant Labs CTO Dr. Richard Carback notes that the approach narrows the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, roughly 20 minutes.
