Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Electronic Shekel

In a historic move, Israel's financial regulatory body has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the digital token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY, a leading consultancy firm. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, supported by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
