US Regulatory Body Takes New York to Court Over Prediction Market Dispute

In its latest move to assert nationwide regulatory control over prediction market firms, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has filed a lawsuit against New York. This action follows the state's recent lawsuit against Coinbase and Gemini, alleging their prediction market contracts breached local gambling laws. The CFTC maintains that federal law grants it exclusive authority to regulate commodity futures, options, and swaps, thereby preempting state law. However, a group of 37 state attorneys general, including New York's Letitia James, has countered that this stance threatens the states' ability to safeguard their citizens. The CFTC has also taken similar action against Arizona, Connecticut, and Illinois, claiming event contracts fall within federal jurisdiction. New York authorities have stated they are simply enforcing state laws on gambling, emphasizing their commitment to protecting consumers and upholding local regulations.
