Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the shekel, marking a significant milestone in the country's fintech landscape. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to launch the BILS token. This collaborative effort, which involved the Solana network, Fireblocks, and EY, underscores the growing importance of regulated stablecoins in the global economy. The stablecoin market has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the United States. However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets, where US dollar-pegged tokens dominate the sector. By introducing a shekel-pegged stablecoin, Israel aims to promote its national currency in the digital economy, capitalizing on the shekel's strong performance, which has seen it gain over 20% against the US dollar in the past year. This development positions the shekel alongside other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being integrated into blockchain-based financial systems.
