Crypto Coalition Unveils Plan to Mitigate Aave Token Exploit

A $300 million shortfall has prompted a coalition of crypto stakeholders to devise a comprehensive recovery plan. DeFi United, the group spearheading the effort, has outlined a step-by-step approach to restore the backing of rsETH after a massive hack compromised the token's value. The plan, which relies heavily on Aave's infrastructure, aims to unwind the damage and stabilize the markets. The incident occurred on April 18 when an attacker exploited a vulnerability in rsETH's bridge, resulting in the release of 116,500 unauthorized tokens. These tokens were then dispersed across multiple wallets and deployed in various DeFi applications, with a significant portion used as collateral on lending platforms like Aave. The proposal seeks to address two primary issues: restoring the backing of rsETH and unwinding the loans created using the exploited tokens. To achieve this, DeFi United has secured enough ETH commitments to fully re-collateralize rsETH and plans to feed this ETH back into the system in stages. The plan also involves carefully unwinding the affected loans on Aave, which will enable the recovery of underlying assets like ETH. The successful execution of this plan hinges on governance approvals, the deployment of committed funds, and a smooth unwind process. If successful, the plan aims to fully restore the backing of rsETH and stabilize the affected markets.
