Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
In a significant move to bridge the gap between traditional and tokenized equities, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized securities. This innovation allows investors to participate more actively in corporate governance, leveraging the transparency and accessibility of blockchain technology. Through a collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now enables holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company documents and cast their voting preferences via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. This integration empowers investors to engage with corporate governance tools typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts, using their crypto wallets for seamless access. The introduction of proxy voting is particularly noteworthy as the tokenized equities sector experiences rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, more than tripling in size over the past year. As a leading issuer in this sector, Ondo Finance has tokenized stocks and ETFs worth over $700 million on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting addresses a critical gap in tokenized equities, which often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens are distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, this new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this development aligns with Ondo's mission to enhance access to traditional financial assets. "By combining the benefits of being on-chain, such as free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, with the governance of the underlying assets, we are making significant strides in our vision," Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its capabilities to blockchain systems through this partnership. The goal is to create a unified workflow that supports both digital and conventional assets, ensuring a high level of auditability, transparency, and compliance. "Achieving this level of transparency and compliance will be instrumental in making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors," said Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge.
