Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel

In a significant move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This development marks a milestone in the growth of the stablecoin sector, which has expanded to over $300 billion in the past 18 months. The BILS token was created in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has seen tremendous growth, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, according to Visual Capitalist, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
