DeFi Community Unites to Support Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack

The decentralized finance world is witnessing an unprecedented level of cooperation in response to a recent crisis. Aave, a leading lending protocol, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort following significant losses resulting from the Kelp DAO exploit. This initiative, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a unified industry response. Aave Labs and various ecosystem participants are working together to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery plan, with Aave's founder, Stani Kulechov, personally donating 5,000 ETH. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in the discussions, and Joseph Lubin has expressed his support for the initiative, stating that the Ethereum ecosystem is at its best when it moves together. The effort has also drawn smaller contributions from the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle to allocate stETH, ETH, and credit facilities. Furthermore, entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun are providing deposits and purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also contributing. The Aave Labs spokesperson emphasized that these are long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys and Sharplink maintaining close contact throughout. The contributions are structured in various ways, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, highlighting different approaches to balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support the coordinated remediation effort. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
