Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's US finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that his family received a loan from Tether to facilitate his divestment of company shares to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have asked Tether, a leading stablecoin issuer, whether it provided financial assistance for Lutnick's transfer of his stake in the financial services company to trusts tied to his adult children, as he complied with government ethics requirements after taking office. The lawmakers expressed concern that if the reports are accurate, they would raise serious questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence on his policy decisions. This development comes after Congress passed a new law governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, with CEO Ardoino attending the White House signing ceremony. Lutnick, a member of the President's Working Group on Digital Assets, has been advised to prioritize the public interest over personal financial interests. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not yet responded to requests for comment.
