Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin: the Digital Shekel
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of the BILS stablecoin was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and Big Four consultancy firm EY, which provided auditing oversight. The stablecoin sector has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. This surge is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, concerns have been raised in markets outside of the US regarding the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty if on-chain payments default to the US dollar as their unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as one of the strongest performing fiat currencies among developed markets, thanks to its resilient technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has gained over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other leading currencies such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
