Unregulated Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Official Absence
Hong Kong's financial regulator has cautioned that fake stablecoins are taking advantage of the city's newly introduced stablecoin framework, even before the launch of the first officially sanctioned product. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority stated that certain tokens, identified by the ‘HKDAP’ and ‘HSBC’ tickers, are being traded without any legitimate connection to authorized issuers. Both applicants mentioned in related media releases confirmed that they have not released any compliant stablecoins. Earlier this month, the HKMA awarded its inaugural stablecoin licenses under the recently enacted Stablecoins Ordinance, selecting two applicants out of 36. This decision mirrors the existing banking system in Hong Kong, where a limited number of commercial banks are authorized to issue currency notes. The HKMA advised the public to exercise caution against deceitful activities, recommending that users rely solely on official communications from licensed entities and conduct transactions through regulated channels. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
