Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Successfully Executing the Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology
The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin, once considered a distant concern, has become more pressing. Quantum security startup Project Eleven has awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement represents the largest public demonstration of a quantum attack that could potentially threaten the security of bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies. The attack, which utilized Shor's algorithm, highlights the vulnerability of elliptic curve cryptography to quantum computing. Although Lelli's result is significant, it does not pose an immediate threat to bitcoin, as the cryptocurrency uses 256-bit elliptic curve security.
