Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the nation's first stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel, following a two-year evaluation process. Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token, known as BILS, after collaborating with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, under the auditing supervision of Big Four consultancy firm EY. This development marks a significant milestone in the stablecoin sector, which has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets, where on-chain payments may default to the dollar as their primary unit of account. However, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated resilience, with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, in gaining traction within blockchain-based financial systems.
