Crypto Coalition Unveils Plan to Mitigate Aave Token Exploit
A novel approach to crisis management is unfolding in the crypto space. Following a devastating hack that left a $300 million void, a coalition of blockchain projects and crypto ecosystem stakeholders is drafting a repair plan. DeFi United, the group spearheading the recovery effort, has outlined a detailed, multi-step strategy to revive the backing of rsETH, a token severely impacted by the Kelp DAO breach. The plan, circulated on Aave's official X account, envisions a coordinated effort to utilize Aave's infrastructure and stabilize the markets. The exploit, which occurred on April 18, was perpetrated by an attacker who manipulated the rsETH bridge, resulting in the unauthorized release of 116,500 tokens. These tokens were subsequently dispersed across multiple wallets and deployed in various DeFi applications, with a significant portion used as collateral on lending platforms like Aave. The proposal seeks to address two pressing issues: restoring the backing of rsETH and unwinding the loans created with the exploited tokens. To achieve this, DeFi United has secured sufficient ETH commitments to fully re-collateralize rsETH and plans to reintroduce this ETH into the system in stages. Meanwhile, the plan involves carefully unwinding the affected lending positions, including those created by the attacker on Aave. By temporarily adjusting the valuation of rsETH within the system, these bad positions can be liquidated or closed more smoothly, allowing for the recovery of underlying assets like ETH. The proposal estimates that around 13,000 ETH could be freed up from Aave alone. Once the collateral is recovered, it will be converted into ETH to cover the shortfall caused by the exploit. Although the process carries risks, including the need for governance approvals and successful fund deployment, it reflects a more coordinated response than previously seen in the DeFi space. The ultimate goal is to fully restore the backing of rsETH and stabilize the affected markets.
