Gemini Secures Derivatives License, Expands into Regulated Prediction Markets

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has received approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a derivatives clearinghouse license. This development enables Gemini to clear and settle trades internally, granting the company greater control over its prediction market products. As a result, Gemini's shares experienced a significant surge of approximately 7%. The crypto exchange is now poised to enter the regulated derivatives and prediction markets, which have witnessed a remarkable growth of over 300% in 2025, with a trading volume of $63.5 billion. With this license, Gemini aims to establish a comprehensive trading ecosystem, encompassing sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. The company has also expressed its intention to expand into crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for U.S. users, further solidifying its position in the market. This milestone marks a crucial step in Gemini's efforts to create a 'super app' for financial services, as stated by Cameron Winklevoss. Following its exit from the U.K., European Union, and Australia, Gemini has reaffirmed its focus on the U.S. market, citing the country's superior capital markets as the driving force behind its strategy. The founders believe that prediction markets have the potential to surpass the size of current capital markets, underscoring their commitment to this rapidly evolving sector.
