Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat, 6.9 Million BTC at Risk

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, ownership is at significant risk. The current cryptographic protection of bitcoin wallets relies on a type of math that can be broken by quantum computers, potentially allowing attackers to drain wallets. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can collapse the gap in breaking this math, and recent research has shown that such an attack may be feasible with fewer resources than previously thought. The response to this threat is complicated by bitcoin's decentralized nature and lack of formal governance, making the coordination of a security upgrade challenging. Unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place, bitcoin lacks a unified strategy to address this issue, with various proposals lacking broad support from core developers. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to implement effective solutions to counter the quantum threat before it's too late.
