Major Players in the Crypto Industry Unite to Rescue Aave Users After Massive Hack

The world of decentralized finance is often fragmented, but in times of crisis, it can also reveal a surprising level of cooperation. Aave, a leading lending protocol in DeFi, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort following significant losses resulting from the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, informally referred to as 'DeFi United,' has garnered around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, although much of this capital is still awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted what could become one of the most coordinated industry responses to a DeFi incident to date. Aave Labs, the entity behind Aave, has proposed allocating up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery plan, while its founder, Stani Kulechov, has pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also supporting the effort with significant ETH contributions. The response has quickly expanded beyond Aave's immediate orbit, with Consensys and its founder, Joseph Lubin, committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Smaller but significant contributions are coming from various corners of the community, including Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle, each proposing different forms of support, such as stETH allocations, ETH plans, and credit facility loans. Additionally, entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun are making deposits into Aave or purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with names like Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, Ink Foundation, and Tyro also joining in, albeit with unspecified commitment sizes. Aave Labs emphasizes that these are long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys and Sharplink being in close contact throughout the process. The nature of contributions varies, with some offering grants, others deposits, and several extending credit lines, reflecting different strategies for balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed to Arbitrum governance the release of approximately 30,765.67 ETH, currently immobilized by the network's Security Council, into the coordinated remediation effort. The goal is to make affected rsETH holders whole again and restore rsETH's backing. While much of the capital is still subject to governance approval and several proposals are under discussion, the breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi. As Joseph Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem has always been at its best when it moves together.' DeFi United represents a broad, coordinated response aimed at protecting users and strengthening the infrastructure of the ecosystem.
