Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
In a bid to enhance the investor experience, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized equities, totaling over $700 million. This innovative feature, developed in collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, enables investors to engage in corporate governance by reviewing company filings and submitting voting preferences via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. By leveraging this capability, investors can access documents and governance tools typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts, all while utilizing their crypto wallets for secure login. The introduction of proxy voting is a significant development in the rapidly expanding tokenized equities sector, which has experienced triple-digit growth over the past year, with over $1.1 billion in value locked. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo's move underscores its commitment to providing investors with a more comprehensive and traditional equity-like experience. The addition of proxy voting to equity tokens is particularly noteworthy, as these offerings have often been criticized for lacking basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, the new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this development is a key aspect of the company's vision to make traditional financial assets more accessible, combining the benefits of on-chain assets with the governance rights associated with underlying assets. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems, with the goal of providing seamless support for both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows. By offering investors the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance, this move is expected to enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized ecosystem, as noted by Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge.
