Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to issue the token. Dubbed BILS, the stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY overseeing the auditing process. This development comes at a time when the stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth, exceeding $300 billion in the last 18 months, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel, having demonstrated resilience with a strong performance among developed markets, has gained over 20% against the dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems, thereby positioning it for greater traction in the digital economy.
