Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Prize for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology

The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin has become more tangible as an independent researcher, Giancarlo Lelli, has been awarded a 1 bitcoin prize for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks a significant milestone, being 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration in September 2025. The quantum attack, which could potentially threaten the security of bitcoin and other major blockchains, has been a concern for the crypto community. Elliptic curve cryptography, the math behind crypto wallets, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can challenge this assumption, posing a risk to the security of these wallets. Lelli's result, although not a direct threat to bitcoin's 256-bit elliptic curve security, demonstrates the rapid progress being made in quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result expanded that by a significant factor in just seven months. Theoretical resource estimates for a full 256-bit attack have also dropped, with a recent Google Research paper putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. This has sparked concern among bitcoin developers, with proposals for migration paths, including BIP-360, to add quantum-safe address types. The threat is particularly pressing for wallets with public keys already visible on-chain, with an estimated 6.9 million bitcoin at risk. As the barrier to running quantum attacks in practice continues to drop, the crypto community is taking steps to prepare for a post-quantum future.
