Israel Unveils First Regulated Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in partnership with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight provided by EY, BILS is poised to make a significant impact. The stablecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, with its value exceeding $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
