Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible with the recent achievement of Giancarlo Lelli, who broke a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly available quantum hardware. This feat, recognized with a 1 bitcoin bounty by Project Eleven, demonstrates a substantial leap in quantum computing capabilities. Elliptic curve cryptography, a crucial component of cryptocurrency security, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm pose a significant challenge to this assumption. Although Lelli's achievement does not immediately compromise the security of bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it underscores the progressing threat of quantum attacks. The previous public demonstration of a 6-bit break has been surpassed by Lelli's 15-bit result, marking a 512-fold increase in just seven months. This rapid advancement in quantum computing has significant implications for the security of cryptocurrencies, with an estimated 6.9 million bitcoin potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. In response, developers are exploring migration paths to quantum-safe address types, such as BIP-360, to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing.
