Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot program, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in collaboration with the Solana network, Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight provided by EY, the BILS token represents a major breakthrough in Israel's financial sector. The global stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
