New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork

The developers of a new wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing using a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. On Tuesday, Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network wallet, which utilizes the Arch Network system to build smart contracts directly linked to Bitcoin, rather than relying on a separate chain or wrapped tokens. This approach enables the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, which is a tested cryptographic technique that does not rely on elliptic curve math that could be vulnerable to quantum computer attacks. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of this wallet comes amid an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork to implement quantum-resistant measures. However, the Quip wallet's approach requires no fork, no consensus change, and no community vote, providing an alternative solution to the problem.
