Senator Warren Queries Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Alleged Tether Loan to Family Members

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's US finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that his children's trust received a loan from Tether to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of company shares to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have asked Tether, the largest global stablecoin issuer, whether it provided financing for Lutnick's multibillion-dollar transfer of his company stake to his children through trusts. The lawmakers expressed concerns that the reported loan could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and its potential influence on his policy decisions. The inquiry comes after Congress passed a law to regulate stablecoin issuers like Tether, with Lutnick and Tether CEO Ardoino attending the White House signing ceremony. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives for the Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment.
