Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel
For the first time, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to a stablecoin tied to the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in partnership with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with audit oversight provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY, BILS represents a major breakthrough. The global stablecoin sector has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion, driven largely by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has sparked concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, bolstered by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the dollar, outperforming other major currencies. By introducing the shekel to blockchain-based financial systems, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in this space.
