US Regulator Adopts AI to Streamline Crypto Registration Process
In a bid to bolster its regulatory oversight of the cryptocurrency sector, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to compensate for a reduced workforce. According to Chairman Mike Selig, the agency is developing new technologies to improve its capabilities, including the use of AI to monitor trading data and review registration applications. The CFTC, known for its openness to digital assets, is pushing to become a leading regulator in the US crypto sector. Chairman Selig emphasized that AI tools can help automate the manual submission of documents, flag incomplete applications, and make the review process more efficient for staff. The agency is also utilizing Microsoft's Copilot and developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and conducting market surveillance. Selig highlighted the importance of embracing technology, particularly in the context of emerging technologies like crypto and prediction markets. One of the significant initiatives under his leadership has been the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a taxonomy for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The CFTC is also taking action to police fraud, manipulation, and insider trading in crypto markets. Furthermore, the agency has been involved in contentious issues surrounding prediction markets, with Selig maintaining that the CFTC has exclusive jurisdiction over these firms. The regulator has sued several states and is taking a strong stance against bad actors in the market, demonstrating its commitment to enforcement and oversight.
