KuCoin EU Enhances AML Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In an effort to address regulatory concerns, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has augmented its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) instructed the exchange to halt its European operations due to insufficient staffing in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which holds a MiCA license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the regulator, stating that they have been 'very honest, transparent, and supportive.' Since February, KuCoin EU has been focused on strengthening its compliance team through multiple appointments, significantly expanding its capabilities. The exchange has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. following a CFTC order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator might allow KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
