KuCoin EU Enhances Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) ordered the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To rectify the situation, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. As a result, KuCoin EU has been strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments. The exchange has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the US market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and receiving a regulatory warning from Dubai's VARA for operating without a license. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
