Trump Administration Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Federal Reserve Nominee

The US Department of Justice's decision to abandon its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has brought President Donald Trump's economic policy agenda one step closer to fruition, as his nominee to replace Powell, Kevin Warsh, may now face a smoother confirmation process. Warsh, who has significant personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency space, is awaiting a final vote from the Senate after a recent confirmation hearing. Trump has been critical of Powell's management of interest rates and chose Warsh as his replacement. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had threatened to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ's investigation into Powell continued. The probe, which was dropped on Friday, centered on cost overruns in a Federal Reserve building project. The DOJ has asked the Fed's inspector general to investigate the matter and issue a report. Following the news, the likelihood of Warsh's confirmation before May 15 surged from around 30% to over 80% on a prediction betting platform. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that her office would close the investigation but reserved the right to restart it if necessary. Trump's ability to appoint his preferred candidates to the Federal Reserve would grant him greater influence over US monetary policy and provide him with more allies on the Fed board, which makes decisions on financial policy, including regulations for the cryptocurrency industry. The development may allow the Republican-majority Senate to expedite Warsh's confirmation, who has pledged to act independently of the White House during his hearing. However, Senator Elizabeth Warren, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, dismissed the move, arguing that it was an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation. Warren noted that the administration is still pursuing a court case against Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Senator Tillis, on the other hand, expressed his support for Warsh, calling him a 'great nominee' and stating that he would vote in favor of his confirmation once the DOJ dropped its investigation into Powell.
