Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents as the Future of Cryptocurrency Payments
The emergence of AI agents is revolutionizing online transactions, with cryptocurrency infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously unfeasible has become a reality over the past nine months, thanks to advancements in autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transactions has become apparent. This shift is sparking interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing power, or travel bookings. Pollak believes that the open-source payments protocol x402, developed by Coinbase in collaboration with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be crucial in facilitating this shift. X402 enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API call or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly and at a negligible cost, Pollak explained. There is already noticeable traction, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through X402 to date, the majority of which has occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. 'The goal is to allow agents to operate freely,' he said, envisioning a system where software can effortlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes that the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. 'Top performers are now utilizing agents to further enhance their performance,' he said, describing workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the cryptocurrency sector, the broader challenge remains adoption. According to Pollak, the solution lies not in improved marketing but in making cryptocurrency payments more invisible and seamless.
